Editor's Pick of the Day: Miss Selfridge grey chambray playsuit

miss_selfridge_grey_chambray_playsuit

Okay, before you freak out and say “How is a THAT the pick of the day as we head into winter!?” and close the window in protest, let me explain why I’ve chosen this Miss Selfridge grey chambray playsuit.  First of all, it looks like it’s more expensive than it is – it’s got a lovely cut and great attention to detailing (love those fine pleats on the shoulders), it’s one of the best colours you could wear this season (charcoal grey) and it’s on sale at a kind-of-crazy £22.  While you won’t want to wear it on it’s own during these cooler autumn days, it’s a great little number to throw on over a black woollen polo neck jumper and black opaque tights with some ankle boots or heels for a stylish day or night look.  Do we agree?  Disagree?

It's all about Purple Power this season – but how do you wear it?

purple_power_homepage

If you’ve visited Empora.com in the past few days (and if you haven’t, then why not!?), you would have noticed a brand spanking new homepage with a brand new trend for you to delve into – this season’s colour du jour: purple.  It doesn’t matter which shade you go for – royal purple, ultra violet, plum or grape – the important thing is to know HOW to wear it.

We’d suggest you pair whichever shade you choose with a more sombre, complementary colour such as grey or black – this tones down and modernizes the overall look (especially if you’re wearing the brightest violet you can find).   A purple blouse or camisole under a grey suit will pep up your office look or if you can afford to be a bit more “fashion-forward” in your workplace, then a grape-coloured dress or skirt worn with a black blazer, grey woollen tights and some black ankle boots will look very “now”.

There is a shade of purple out there to suit everybody – lilac and lavender can look very ethereal and romantic on paler skin tones, but can look really dramatic on olive and dark complexions, too.   Darker shades of eggplant, burgundy and grape look especially good with fair hair, but again, this definitely does not discount brunettes!  If you have a darker complexion or darker hair, you can probably wear the darker shades of purple in a more bold way – try wearing a red lip or more dramatic makeup to really offset it.

Get her look: Nadine Coyle's relaxed (yet chic) airport style

Girls Aloud star Nadine Coyle arrived at LAX yesterday looking fresh-faced and cheery (why oh why don’t we look like that when we’ve just hopped off a plane!?) wearing this fab outfit.

If you’d like to take a leaf out her book and travel in comfort AND style, we’d suggest you firstly find yourself a snuggly knit to cosy up in (this Paul & Joe one fits the bill rather nicely).  Throw a basic vest top or t-shirt on underneath so you can remove the knit if it becomes too stuffy.  Nadine’s jeans are uber skinny to the point where they’re almost leggings – we reckon you might as well compromise and get into a pair of jeggings (denim look leggings) which will give you all the comfort factor of leggings but the chic-ness of jeans.  New Look have some great ones, priced at just £15.  Take a pair of snuggly travel socks or slippers with you for the flight, but swap them for a pair of heels, like these Rupert Sanderson ones, to make a stylish airport entrance.

Editor's Pick of the Day: Steve Madden Marvel studded peeptoe shoe boots

steve_madden_studded_heel_booties

Our editor ordered these Steve Madden studded ankle booties as a birthday present to herself and since they landed in the office, they have found themselves planted firmly on her feet – and we hear they’re not going anywhere soon!

They’re not only absolutely gorgeous (well, we would say that wouldn’t we!?) they’re apparently extremely comfortable, too… if you fancy them sitting on your own tootsies, then you better move swiftly as My-Wardrobe only seem to have two pairs left.  Calling all size 37 or 39-wearers!

Were you one of the eager beavers who sat online last night to watch the Burberry show stream live?  If you did, you would have felt pretty smug indeed, as creative director Christopher Bailey churned out a gorgeous collection of candy floss colours and textures – pretty, knotted chiffon in shades of pastel pink, powder blue, lemon and lilac – alongside luxe satin sheen leggings and sparkling crystal trenchcoats – oh, and some of the most covetable shoes we’ve seen in a long, long time!

Pulling a front row crowd that included stars such as Victoria Beckham, Emma Watson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Liv Tyler, Freida Pinto, Dev Patel, Mary-Kate Olsen, Agyness Deyn, Alexa Chung and Daisy Lowe (phew!) is no mean feat, but Burberry’s return to show in London after a number of years in Milan also drew the creme de la creme of the fashion world too, with US Vogue‘s Anna Wintour, French Vogue‘s Carine Roitfeld, editor of US Harper’s Bazaar Glenda Bailey, Alexandra Schulman of UK Vogue and famous fashion photographer Mario Testino all camped out next to the A-listers in the front row.

While it’s proper front row decorum to wear the designer on show, Paltrow, Watson, Deyn and Pinto all managed to get their hands on pieces from the collection before it strutted down the runway – lucky ladies!  It was a triumphant return to London for Bailey, and definitely brought a sense of excitement and glamour to the 25th anniversary of London Fashion Week.

If you missed watching it live, you can watch the full show below:

Editor's Pick of the Day: Basile fringed solid wool and cashmere pashmina shawl

basile_wool_pashmina

If you’re going to buy anything this month, a good pashmina scarf is definitely a wise choice.  As the winds get colder, the mornings get crisper, the days get shorter and your outfits get bulkier, a pashmina is your go-to item to add that extra layer of warmth without much effort.

It can be worn a multitude of different ways, giving your outfits a refreshing new take each day – if you stock up on a variety of colours, you’ll be able to mix and match with even greater ease.  This Basile wool and cashmere blend pashmina shawl will be super cosy and soft wrapped around your neck this autumn.  It’s available in a huge selection of colours (although we think this violet one is gorgeous) and at just £55.38, is a completely bargainous price too.

Seen around the tents at London Fashion Week…

Last week it was all about New York but this week it’s London’s turn to host the world’s most fashionable and glamorous peeps at London Fashion Week.  New York may have had movie stars and A-listers galore, but London does a good job at pulling out of the bag not only some of the best in new and exciting design talent, but also an eclectic crowd of show-goers who have bucket loads of individual style.  From uber-celebs Victoria Beckham and Kate Moss to punk party girls Pixie Geldof and Alice Dellal, the stars have been flocking to see what the Brits have on offer.

Check out who has been seen around the LFW tents and after-parties these past few days…

Victoria Beckham / Roisin Murphy

Victoria Beckham / Roisin Murphy

Victoria Beckham popped into town last night to attend Vogue‘s Fashion Week Dinner Party, wearing a strapless dress from her own Victoria Beckham collection.  She’s tipped to be one of the VIP front-rowers at the Burberry show tonight.

Another one of our favourite Fashion Week attendees, Moloko singer Roisin Murphy, looks stunning in a ruffled dress at the Vivienne Westwood show – the perfect style for accentuating her growing baby bump!

Alexa Chung / Erin O'Connor

Alexa Chung / Erin O'Connor

Lucky Alexa Chung gets the best of both worlds now that she is based in New York, getting to attend the best shows at NYFW last week and now, returning home to support her friends and acquaintances who are showing here.  We’re hearting her YSL platform heels!

Someone else sporting a bit of sparkle and sheen was model Erin O’Connor, who looked as chic as ever in her sequinned tuxedo blazer, harem trousers and offset the head-to-toe black with a vibrant fuchsia bag.

Nicola Roberts / Agyness Deyn

Nicola Roberts / Agyness Deyn

Girls Aloud’s Nicola Roberts is pretty much a regular fixture at LFW, and you can often see her red bouffant hairdo bobbing around in the front row.  This week she has attended several shows included Vivienne Westwood, Topshop Unique and Henry Holland (in this outfit pictured above).  She proves she’s bang on-trend in a leather jacket with a pair of thigh-high boots.

Newly ebony Agyness Deyn may have skipped walking in the shows this season, but you couldn’t keep her away from sitting in the FROW (front row) at her mate Henry Holland‘s show last night.  How great is the combination of her sheer patterned tights worn with those flat ankle boots?!

Little Boots / Alex Curran

Little Boots / Alex Curran

Little Boots stayed true to her name with the standout piece of her outfit being a pair of fab silver ankle boots.  Meanwhile, WAG Alex Curran was also wearing some amazing footwear – her leopard print ankle boots are to-die-for!

Eva Herzigova / Michelle Williams

Eva Herzigova took a leaf out of Erin O’Connor’s style book and realized a black sequinned dress is the ultimate in evening glamour.

Ex-Destiny’s Child star Michelle Williams looked colourful in this Jenny Packham frock and marigold yellow pumps to attend the shows on Day 2 – what an adorable shade of pink!

Alice Dellal / Pixie Geldof

Alice Dellal / Pixie Geldof

Alice Dellal and Pixie Geldof are like two peas in a pod these days, both working their Brit punk look to the extreme, complete with ripped stockings, Doc Marten boots, denim and studding.

Sarah Harding / Jodie Harsh & Fearne Cotton

Sarah Harding joined her Girls Aloud bandmate Nicola Roberts at the Vivienne Westwood show, wearing a showstopping black PVC mini dress, patterned tights and sky-high ankle boots.

Jodie Harsh and Fearne Cotton dressed up in their finery to head to the PPQ show and afterparty at the Mayfair Hotel.  Check out Jodie’s gorgeous Terry de Havilland wedges – we want!
