Spring inspiration: Maxi dresses

Summer is just around the corner, so it’s time to begin purchasing some essential seasonal frocks. One definite must buy is a maxi dress. They offer a more feminine approach than your average cropped dress, adding a hint of glamour to your casual wardrobe. Don’t be intimated by their draping fabric, or afraid they’ll swamp your physique – if petite Nicole Richie can pull them off, you can also!

African, geometric and floral designs are favourites for this summer’s maxi dresses. These bold prints are best paired with simple gladiator sandals and neutral accessories – this way, you can safely avoid overwhelming clashes of colours.

Winter Kate, Blue Multicolour Maxi Dress, £224
BooHoo, Missy bandeau maxi dress , £20
Alice by Temperley, Long Cali maxi dress, £360

Spring inspiration: Raffia shoppers

When Karl Lagerfeld put haystacks, clogs and all things country on the Chanel Spring catwalk, we knew it was destined to become a trend. His latest country creation comes in the form of the ‘Coco Country’ bag; made out of raffia its box shape stays sturdy as you pile it with necessities. The stylish CC logo charm and quilted leather finishes keep the bag looking quintessentially Chanel. A similar Chanel raffia shopper has already been spotted on Rachel Bilson, and with the look now filtering to the high street, (Topshop does a great version), we predict a hot summer trend.

Jimmy Choo, Bazli raffia and leather tote, £595

Carrie Bradshaw: Fashion Moments

Carrie Bradshaw, one of the best loved TV characters of our generation is back in our lives with the highly anticipated Sex and the City 2. Bursting onto our screens with the TV series in1998, with that famous tutu in the opening credits, her character struck a chord in the hearts of millions. For those of you not in the know about Sex and the City, there are five lead characters, Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, Samantha and FASHION. Throughout the TV series fans always tuned in to see a) what happened with Carrie and Mr. Big and b) what would she be wearing? So when the TV series took the leap to film, the pressure grew even higher for the looks to be phenomenal. Looking at the trailer for the sequel it looks as if fashion still plays a very important role in the film. With this in mind we wanted to take a look back to a few of Carries best fashion moments in preparation for the fashion frenzy in SATC2, check out the trailer here and prepare for some serious wardrobe envy.

Iron Man 2 Premiere, LA

The world premiere of highly anticipated film ‘Iron Man 2′ took place last night in La where all of the film’s stars joined force on the red carpet to dazzle fans. Fashion-wise the night was a roaring success with Gwyneth Paltrow and Scarlett Johansson standing out in white. They both favoured Armani, with Paltrow choosing a gorgeous silk Armani short suit and Johansson rocking a sculptural Armani Privé dress. Fellow stars, Olivia Munn and Leslie Bibb worked the nude trend in very different ways, both of them looking stunning. All in all a successful night for fashion!

Giles Deacon to take over at Ungaro?

In the fashion industry there are always rumours buzzing around, at the moment the biggest story on everyone’s lips is that designer Giles Deacon is set to take over as creative director at Emanuel Ungaro. Having worked for the likes of Bottega Veneta and being handpicked by Tom Ford to work on womenswear at Gucci, Giles launched his own label ‘Giles’ in 2003. Most recognisable by his abstract pacman hats and kooky prints, Giles has gathered celebrity fans such as Lily Allen, Thandie Newton and Agyness Deyn.

Giles is a perfect fit for the French brand Emanuel Ungaro, with Giles’ eye for great prints and good sense for commerciality, his appointment as creative director will no doubt end the run of bad luck the company has had with previous employees, (most famously with their connection to Lindsay Lohan).

The latest on the story is ‘No comment’, but with Giles meeting Asim Abdullah (owner of Ungaro) for lunch last week, the industry is rife with speculation. So far various blogs have confirmed the news, but with Ungaro’s spokesperson keeping schtum we’ll all have to hold out for the official declaration.

Spring Inspiration: Denim Dungarees

With denim and utility being such big stories this season it’s no surprise that our old favourite dungarees have made a comeback. With designers such as Ralph Lauren and Jean-Paul Gaultier showcasing their version on the catwalk, dungarees have officially grown up. The key to modernising these denim one-pieces is to either wear them well fitted and tapered to the leg or loose with turn ups and flats. You don’t have to feel restricted to denim either; with satin and even leather versions out there it is easy to do dungarees the sophisticated way.

If you think this utility look is too ‘Tom-boy’ for you, have a go at the trend with a dungaree dress, (a look Alexa Chung always works so well), a nice girly way to work the trend. However you choose to wear them, we think they’re a fun way to incorporate the utility look into your spring/summer wardrobe.
